The Story

Perth is a beautiful Scottish town known as The Fair City since the publication of Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott’s story Fair Maid of Perth in 1828.

Since prehistoric times, there has been a settlement at Perth just above the River Tay, where the river could be crossed at low tide.

Perth has been of great significance in Scottish history due to the presence of Scone Abbey, home of the historic Stone of Destiny where the King of Scots were crowned, and frequent residence of the royal court. It has been a Royal Burgh since King William the Lion bestowed the title in the early 12th century, and became one of the richest trading burghs in the country.

Thanks to its location, Perth became a key transport center with the age of the railways, and its first station was built in 1848.
