Canna is an exquisite jewel of an island, the westernmost of the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland.
Canna now belongs to the National Trust for Scotland, and is run as a farm and conservation area.
With less than 20 permanent residents, there is a zero crime rating on Canna; although a policeman visits twice a year - to maintain gun licenses!
Canna was previously owned by the famous Gaelic scholar John Lorne Campbell, who lived in historic Canna House with his American wife, Margaret Fay Shaw. John also bequeathed an extensive Gaelic archive, of great importance to the nation.
A few years ago, MaeVona creator, Maeve Gillies, was lucky enough to visit Canna with her family, when Margaret Fay Shaw was still very much alive, at the age of almost 100!
Maeve remembers this trip of a lifetime:
"Canna is like nowhere else on earth; a magical place, where the power of nature shapes your life.
You arrive and depart only when the sea lets you; you sleep under the beams of a tiny house on the shore rocked by howling winds; you dream in art-forms, and wake up filled with inspiration. Climbing to the top of Compass Hill, you are blown into a star-shape, trying to stay upright, surrounded by incredible sea-cliffs and crashing gale-force waves.
Basking next to a roaring log fire in Canna House, I marvel at Margaret, as she tells of arriving in Canna from New York, and falling in love with the people and the place. This incredible woman: almost 100, still dancing, still telling stories, playing piano, and twinkling with mischief like a 12 year old girl. When I grow up, I want to be like her!"
